Explore the key connection types
Overview
Welcome to Referral Rock's Integration Docs!
Puts your referral program on autopilot by connecting your with business workflows. Here are the key connection types and why they matter:
- Access Links — Give advocates one-click access and enrollment links inside the tools they already use (email campaigns, portal embeds, SSO).
- Conversion Tracking — Capture a referral conversion through a self-instrumented method: the Referral.js SDK pixel or an on-page checkout/form script. This is not Zapier, not the hosted Referral Rock landing page, and not Customer Feed — those are separate capture paths.
- Customer Feed — Connect your system of record (a billing tool or CRM) and automatically approve referrals when a paid order or won deal occurs. Then, preload those customers into your program as members.
- Referral Routing — Push a new referral into a CRM as a contact, lead, or deal and set its pipeline stage.
- Member Sync — Sync member/advocate referral data onto existing CRM records (share link, referral count, reward status). Native to HubSpot only (not Salesforce); available on other CRMs / marketing tools via Zapier or the REST API.
- Reward Payout — Deliver rewards via payment and gift-card integrations: Tango, PayPal, Wise natively, and also via Zapier or the REST Payouts API.

Install Referral.js firstOur JavaScript SDK assists with required Conversion Tracking and Access Link connection types. The library includes built-in functionality as well as optional methods to call directly. It's highly recommended to install Referral.js as early as possible

Access Links
A member gets an access link and goes through the share experience where they view the program offer, share their referral link with a friend, and are rewarded for the referral. (See diagram)
Integrating the share experience may involve:
- Email newsletters
- In-app experience
- Checkout experience
- Event-based invites
- API calls for a custom experience
Provide the best share experience in your existing product and marketing motions to get your advocates to share.

Conversion Tracking
Make sure you track referrals, so you can correctly reward the member who referred you the new customer.
The referral journey starts on the first click of a member's referral link, where they are taken to a landing page, your website, or anywhere of your choosing. Tracking the referral gives you visibility into <<glossary:referral visits>> across the referral lifecycle which can reward both the member and the referral. (See diagram)
Conversion Tracking is an essential tracking integration point to capture when a referral converts to a customer or lead. It's the only self-instrumented way to uniquely identify who the referral is. This involves capturing contact information from:
- Your web forms
- Ecommerce checkouts
- Our hosted landing page form
- API calls for backend conversions
This is not Zapier, not the hosted Referral Rock referral page, and not Customer Feed. Those are separate capture paths.
Business Activity Updates are only required when you need to trigger rewards based on events after the referral conversion. The two main use cases are:
- Multi-step sales process: a referral is a lead that talks to a salesperson and may need to be qualified
- Recurring actions: multiple rewards can be issued based on repeat purchases or subscriptions

Learn more about Conversion Tracking
Customer Feed
Connect your system of record (a billing tool or CRM).
When a matching paid order or won deal occurs, the matching referral is set to Approved across all programs and the buyer can be preloaded as a member based on your account settings.
Customer Feed is two-way for CRMs, and a one-way read for billing/e-commerce.

Referral Routing
Move a new referral into your CRM as a contact, lead, or deal with Referral Routing. Then, set the referral's pipeline stage.
Referral Routing vs. Member SyncReferral Routing creates a new record from a referral; Member Sync updates existing records with program data. Don't conflate them.

Member Sync
Keep your business operations systems in sync. Add member data to enrich your customer relationship marketing (CRM), customer data platform (CDP), or own system of record.
Once the data is in your systems you can:
- Trigger marketing campaigns in other tools
- Create reports based on program data
- Identify and nurture referral sales leads
- Run engagement campaigns from your CRM
The table below shows the various ways to extract your data from Referral Rock.
